Painted Rocks

There are routes in Arizona that people have traveled for centuries. One example is Interstate 8 that runs through the southern part of the state. It follows the railroad tracks that have carried people and goods since the 19th century. Before that it was a Butterfield Stage route and even earlier, it was the route that Native Americans followed beside the Gila River.

In the timeless urge to say ‘Killroy was here’ they left traces of their passing at the edge of the Sentinel Lava Flow. This is Painted Rock State Park near Gila Bend on the road to San Diego.
